The Science Of Scratching, According To Me

Why do cats scratch? Scientists say it is for claw health, stretching and marking territory. I say it is for FUN. Here is what else the research tells us:

  • Cats scratch on waking, because the day is long.
  • Cats scratch near doors, because doors are rude.
  • Cats scratch the sofa, because the sofa is there.

A study of 63 cats found that 94 percent prefer vertical sisal at least 75 centimetres tall. The remaining six percent preferred the study’s author, who was not amused. Moral of the story: buy tall.
